So, what exactly is “organic SEO,” and why should you care? If you’re an absolute beginner to search engine optimization, fear not, I’m about to break it down in plain English. Organic SEO, also known as organic search engine optimization or natural search optimization, refers to all the strategies used to improve your website’s visibility in the unpaid (“organic”) search results. In simpler terms: it’s how you show up on Google without paying for ads. Unlike paid search ads that appear as “sponsored” links, organic SEO is all about earning your spot on page one through quality content and relevance. 

What Is Organic SEO (In Human Speak)?

Imagine the internet is a giant library and Google is the librarian. When someone asks for information (types a query), Google scans its index of countless “books” (webpages) to recommend the best answer. Organic SEO is the art of making your website that go-to book, the one the librarian excitedly pulls from the shelf because it’s just so darn helpful. It’s all about optimizing for organic search so that your site naturally rises to the top of results. That means using tactics like smart keyword usage, great content, and technical tune-ups to earn higher placement on search engine results pages (SERPs) without paying per click.

Now, you might be wondering: how is organic SEO different from paid search (PPC)? Great question! In a nutshell:

  • Paid search (SEM/PPC) is like renting space at the top of Google. You bid on keywords and your ad shows up as a sponsored result. It’s quick and guarantees visibility as long as you pay.
  • Organic search is like owning the house on that coveted corner lot. You build authority and relevance so Google features you prominently on merit. It takes more time and effort, but the traffic you get is “free” (no per-click costs) and often more trusted by users.

How Search Engines Rank Content (The Basics)

To conquer organic SEO, it helps to know how search engines work behind the scenes. Don’t worry, you won’t need a computer science degree for this part. Let’s demystify it step by step:

Crawling & Indexing

Search engines like Google constantly send out “spiders” (cute, right?) to crawl webpages and index them. Think of spiders as little scouts that catalog every page they find. This process isn’t instantaneous, Google doesn’t notice new or updated content immediately, which means SEO results take time. In fact, “Google has a three-step search process… it needs time to crawl, index, and assess your website’s relevance.” So if you publish a new page today, it might be days or weeks before Google adds it to its library.

Relevance & Keywords

Once indexed, your page can be considered for search queries. How does Google decide if your page is relevant to what someone searched? Largely by looking at your content and keywords. Keywords are the terms people type into search engines (“Austin coffee shops,” “how to fix a leaky faucet,” etc.). Using the right keywords in your content (naturally and strategically) tells Google what topics you cover. For example, if your website sells coffee beans, you’ll want content optimized for keywords like “buy organic coffee online” or “best coffee roasters in Austin” so Google knows to show your page when someone searches those phrases. Keyword research (finding out what terms your audience is searching) is a core part of organic SEO.

Quality Content & Search Intent

Relevance is about answering the searcher’s intent. Search engines have gotten smarter, they prioritize content that truly satisfies what the user is looking for. So, your content should be high-quality, informative, and matched to the intent (e.g., if someone searches “how to brew French press coffee,” a step-by-step guide or video will beat a page that just sells French presses). In Google’s eyes, content is king, and a helpful king at that.

Authority & Backlinks

Think of this as your website’s reputation. If lots of other reputable sites link to your site (backlinks), it’s like the internet is vouching for you. Google sees those backlinks as votes of confidence. A page with many quality backlinks tends to rank higher because it’s considered more authoritative or popular. Building this authority is a major aspect of organic SEO (though it requires earning links naturally by creating great content or doing outreach…no sketchy link schemes, please).

User Experience & Technical Factors

Google doesn’t just look at what you say; it also watches how users interact and how your site performs. Factors like page speed, mobile-friendliness, site security (HTTPS), and overall user experience play into SEO. If your site loads slowly or is a nightmare to navigate, users will bounce and search engines notice. Google wants to promote sites that not only have relevant info but also offer a good experience. As Google’s own guidance notes, it cares about things like user experience, page speed, and even how long people dwell on your page. The takeaway: a technically sound, user-friendly website is more likely to earn Google’s love.


In short, search engines rank content by assessing relevance (does your page answer the query well?) and authority/trust (is your site reputable and user-friendly?). Organic SEO is about covering all these bases, from the words on your pages to the way other sites reference you and how fast your site loads.

Key Ingredients of a Successful Organic SEO Strategy

Now that you know how Google thinks, let’s talk about the practical side: what do you actually do to optimize for SEO organic search? Here are the key ingredients:

1. Keyword Research & On-Page Optimization

Start by discovering what terms your potential customers search for. There are handy tools (Google’s Keyword Planner, SEMrush, etc.) to find keywords relevant to your business. Once you have your target keywords, strategically incorporate them into your pages: think titles, headings, meta descriptions, and naturally throughout your content. On-page SEO is about making it crystal clear to both Google and readers what your page is about. Pro tip: focus on one primary topic/keyword per page and make sure the content delivers on that topic. 

Why focus on one primary topic/keyword per page? Because search engines recognize when you’re stuffing your copy with keywords (AKA “keyword stuffing”) and you want to be careful to avoid keyword cannibalization. Keyword cannibalization is one of the major issues that has a detrimental effect on search engine rankings. SEMrush explains keyword cannibalization to be when multiple pages on your website are targeting exactly the same keyword, they may eventually start competing against each other. Search engines will be forced to make a choice as to which page they should display in search results, and their choice may not be the one you want.

2. Quality Content Creation

Content is the vehicle for your keywords and the value you provide to users. Regularly publish content that educates, entertains, or helps your audience. This could be blog posts, how-to guides, case studies, infographics or whatever suits your audience (do your research!). The key is quality and relevance. A well-researched, well-written article on a topic in your niche will do wonders for SEO (and it’s more likely to attract those sweet backlinks from other sites). Remember, you’re writing for humans first and search engines second. If your content genuinely answers people’s questions or needs, Google will take notice. 

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m largely saying “Google” instead of Yahoo or Bing etc. This is because Google accounts for 91.54% of the global search engine market. This doesn’t mean you should count out the others, but a good marketer knows where their audience is finding them.

3. Technical SEO

Think of this as the under-the-hood tuning of your website. You want to ensure search engines can easily crawl and understand your site. This includes things like having a clear site structure (use internal links to help bots find all your pages), fixing broken links, creating an XML sitemap, and adding descriptive alt text to your images. It also means optimizing for speed: compress images, use caching, and avoid bloated code so your pages load quickly. And since the world has gone mobile, ensure your site is mobile-responsive (Google predominantly uses the mobile version of sites for indexing). Technical SEO might sound geeky, but for basics, just know it’s about eliminating any roadblocks that would prevent your site from showing up in search results.

4. Backlink Building (Off-Page SEO)

As mentioned, backlinks are like votes for your site’s credibility. Especially when you’re new, search engines don’t know if you’re trustworthy, backlinks help prove your worth. Organic link building can be done through tactics like guest posting on other blogs, creating share-worthy content (studies, infographics, videos that people naturally link to), or getting listed in industry directories. It takes time, but each quality backlink is a step up in authority. Natural search optimization isn’t about spamming links everywhere; it’s about earning links by being genuinely link-worthy.

5. Local SEO

If your business serves a specific geographic area, local SEO is huge. If it doesn’t you should still consider it important given that 46% of Google searches have local intent in 2025. That means you should be optimizing for local search terms (“plumber in [Your City]”), getting your Google Business Profile set up and polished, encouraging customer reviews, and ensuring your name, address, and phone are consistent across directories. 6. Patience and Consistency

This isn’t a tangible “thing” to optimize, but it’s perhaps the most important element of all. Organic SEO is a long game. You won’t get to the top of Page 1 overnight, and if someone promises you that, run the other way. In the SEO world we have something called Black Hat SEO techniques. Forbes defines Black hat SEO as

“Techniques used to boost a website’s ranking on search engines in a manner that goes against search engine guidelines…black hat SEO exploits the search engine algorithm with the sole intention of increasing a website’s ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs), sacrificing a good user experience in the process.”

SEO involves consistent effort: updating content, tweaking pages, building links, monitoring results, and adapting to algorithm changes. It can take months to see significant movement. But once your organic rankings solidify, it’s like a flywheel: momentum builds and the results can be game-changing for your traffic and business. More on the patience part later, because yes, we know it can be frustrating to wait, especially if you’ve been going it alone or struggling to rank for a while now.

Why Organic SEO Matters (a LOT)

You might be thinking: “Alright, this sounds like a lot of work… is it really worth it?” Let the stats answer that: 75% of searchers don’t even click past the first page of results. That’s right. If you’re not on page one, the majority of people will never find you. Need another? The #1 organic search result is 10 times more likely to receive a click than the #10 result. In other words, organic search is often the very first touchpoint between a customer and your business.

Consider this scenario: You run a small boutique in Austin that sells eco-friendly apparel. A potential customer searches for “best sustainable fashion stores in Austin.” If you’ve invested in SEO organic search optimization and your site appears in the top results, you just earned a free visit (and maybe a sale!). If not, that customer likely goes to a competitor.

Organic SEO builds trust and credibility. Many users inherently trust organic results more than ads. Showing up organically for relevant searches sends a message: “We’re here, we’re relevant, and we know our stuff.” Plus, organic traffic (visitors who come via search) tends to have good conversion potential because they were searching for what you offer with intent. One industry stat even noted that organic search traffic captures more than 40% of revenue for businesses. The long-term ROI of SEO can be impressive, especially compared to paying for every single click through ads.

SEO can drive substantial growth, but only if you’re patient and persistent. Unlike a paid campaign that stops giving results the minute you turn off the budget, a solid organic ranking can keep bringing visitors month after month with no additional cost per visitor. It’s an investment in long-term visibility.

Lastly, let’s not forget the competitive angle: if you don’t optimize for natural search, your competitors surely will. SEO is a common playing field now, which means neglecting it is basically handing over market share. The good news is, with the basics covered and a bit of perseverance, even a small business can outrank bigger players in specific niches. Organic SEO helps level the playing field on the web.

A witty comparison post like “Trello vs. [YourTool]: Managing Remote Projects Made Easy” might climb the ranks and draw in high-intent visitors. The outcome: a steady stream of trial sign-ups organically, without spending a fortune on ads. Tech companies often use organic SEO to become thought leaders. When your how-to guides and resource articles show up for industry queries, you build credibility and customer pipelines simultaneously.

Professional Services (Law Firm Example)

SEO isn’t just for products! Service businesses win big too. Picture a boutique law firm in Austin specializing in startup law. We’d help them implement natural search optimization by creating content around the questions their clients ask: “How to incorporate a startup in Texas,” “LLC vs C-Corp for startups,” etc. With on-page SEO and perhaps a few guest posts on relevant sites (building backlinks), their informative articles start ranking. When a local entrepreneur searches “startup lawyer Austin” or seeks info on incorporation, our client’s site appears as a helpful resource. Emerging Industry (Cannabis Dispensary Example)

For highly regulated or emerging industries like cannabis, organic SEO can be a lifesaver. Why? Traditional paid ads are often restricted (Google Ads has limitations on cannabis, for instance). So, a cannabis dispensary or CBD product company might rely heavily on content and SEO to get found. By optimizing for terms like “CBD oil benefits” or “dispensary near me [City]” and ensuring their site has schema markup for reviews/locations, they can capture search traffic that competitors miss. We could create a knowledge hub on their site (blogs, FAQs) answering common questions about legality, usage, etc. Over time, Google sees this site as a trusted information source in that niche. The hypothetical result: when someone in their area searches “best dispensary in town” or “how does CBD help anxiety,” our client’s site ranks high and draws the click, because they’ve built relevance and trust organically.


Those examples show that whether you’re a local brick-and-mortar or a national B2B company, the principles of organic SEO adapt to your needs. Gen AI Has Changed Organic SEO

Just when you thought you were getting the hang of this whole organic SEO thing… enter Generative AI, stage left. From Google’s Search Generative Experience to ChatGPT’s browsing capabilities, the way people search (and the way search engines respond) is changing a lot. And yes, that changes how websites rank. I wrote a blog about the implications of a search engine-enabled AI in my blog, ChatGPT With No Restrictions—Is SearchGPT the Unfiltered Future? back in August of 2024. It’s been a while and lots of advancements have been made since then, and while I’m not trying to overload you with information here, please allow me to break it down without sending your cortisol through the roof.

First: AI-powered search engines aren’t just showing lists of links anymore. They’re summarizing, suggesting, and sometimes answering everything before a user even sees the traditional search results. They’re scooping up the “best content” (we’ll talk about what that means) from across the web and presenting it in conversational format. If your site’s not in the mix, you may not get seen. Here’s what I’m talking about: 

Second: AI doesn’t just look for exact matches to your keywords anymore; it scans your content for meaning. If your blog on “natural search engine optimization” also answers related questions like “how does organic SEO work?” and “why is SEO better than paid ads?” (*wink wink) you’re more likely to show up in AI-generated summaries. With rankings being contextual, you can do things like use topic clusters with internal linking structures instead of just targeting single keywords, and use latent semantic keywords (LSI) and natural language to deepen relevance. I’ve found that answering multiple user intents within one piece of content (informational, transactional, navigational) is also a good strategy. 

Third: Generative AI engines tailor responses based on a user’s previous queries, behavior, and preferences. That means two people searching for the same phrase might see different summaries or top links. This personalization makes traditional, one-size-fits-all SEO less reliable. I’ve found that when I prioritize brand building and trust signals in my content, then AI likes it more (I believe this is because it often prefers sources that users frequently engage with or recognize, and brand building/trust signal copy shows a level of familiarity and warmth). You can also encourage user engagement (comments, shares, time on page) to feed positive behavior signals into ranking algorithms too! I would also suggest you consider creating user persona-specific content that answers the same question differently for different audiences. That way you’re automatically catering to Gen AI’s goal to personalize!


Lastly: Gen AI tools love content they can easily parse and repurpose. Think clear answers, FAQ formats, schema markup, and strong internal linking. (Hey, I wrote a blog on how to create a social media SEO strategy that covers this too!). The point I’m making is that Generative AI tools often pull from a select group of high-authority websites when generating summaries. If your site doesn’t demonstrate expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-A-T), you may be left out of the AI’s summary responses, even if you rank well traditionally. 

Since We’re On the Topic of AI and SEO…

I would be remiss if I didn’t give you a little relief from all of the things you need to do to make sure you’re keeping pace with the changes AI is causing. So let me tell you about the ways you can also use AI to your advantage when you’re working on your organic SEO strategy!

Content Generation & Optimization

AI writing tools like Jasper, Copy.ai, and even ChatGPT have become surprisingly adept at drafting content. They can generate blog post outlines or even complete drafts in a flash. This helps marketers crank out content faster. For example, you can prompt an AI to “Write an article about natural search optimization tips for small businesses” and get a decent first draft to refine. Beyond writing, AI can also optimize content structure, suggesting headings or FAQ sections based on what’s ranking. (Of course, human polish is still mandatory, we’ve all seen the funky or generic stuff AI can spit out on its own (no really, does anyone else feel like everything they are reading nowadays was authored by ChatGPT?).

Keyword Research & Clustering

Modern SEO tools use AI to analyze mountains of search data in seconds. You can input one seed keyword and have the AI tool suggest a cluster of related keywords and topics to target. For instance, an AI-powered SEO tool might analyze “organic SEO” and come back with clusters like “on-page SEO techniques,” “SEO vs PPC,” “technical SEO checklist” and so on, each with relevant subtopics. I personally use SEMrush’s Keyword Strategy Builder to do this! It helps me cover a topic comprehensively and target multiple related search terms with the content I’m creating. Essentially, AI can crunch search patterns and tell you “people searching X also tend to search Y and Z” which is extremely useful for building out your content calendar (and I say this as a Content Marketing Manager who creates lots of content calendars).

Schema Markup Automation

If “schema markup” sounds like alien language, don’t worry, it’s basically extra code that helps search engines understand your content (and can lead to those nice rich results like star ratings or FAQ dropdowns in search listings). Writing schema code by hand can be tedious (especially if you aren’t a coder..….). Enter AI: There are tools now that analyze your page and automatically generate appropriate schema markup (for FAQs, how-tos, events, etc.). For example, if you have a FAQ section on your page, an AI tool can spit out the JSON-LD code to implement FAQ schema (did you understand that?) which you then add to your page for enhanced search snippets (feel free to read that again). This kind of automation ensures you don’t miss out on technical optimizations that give you an edge in rankings.

SEO Analysis & Predictions

AI can identify patterns in what content ranks well. It can look at the top 20 Google results for a given query and highlight commonalities, maybe they all have a certain word count, or all include a video, etc. Some AI SEO platforms will score your content and guide you on how to improve it to better match the “ideal” profile for a target keyword (length, readability, use of semantically related terms). AI is also being used to monitor algorithm updates and even predict search trend shifts. We’re in an era where tools might alert you like, “Hey, Google’s giving more love to pages with interactive content, so consider adding a quiz or tool to this page.” It’s like having a little SEO strategist that never sleeps :)


All that said, AI is a supplement, not a substitute for a sound SEO strategy. It’s great for speeding up research, automating grunt work (like generating meta descriptions or clustering keywords), and even drafting content for you! But you still need that human touch, which means understanding your audience, injecting creativity, and making judgment calls.

Modern SEO may not yield instant gratification (unlike a paid ad you launch today and see clicks tomorrow), but it builds equity. It’s like planting a fruit tree, you won’t get fruit this week, but give it care and time, and you’ll have a steady supply season after season. The key is to set the right expectations. Typically, you should plan for a 6-12 month horizon to see significant results from a fresh SEO effort (sometimes quicker for less competitive niches, or longer for very competitive ones). But every small win along the way, a new blog post that ranks on page 2, then page 1; an uptick in traffic after fixing some site issues, is progress that accumulates. 

My advice (and mindset) is: embrace the journey, and for the love of m*rketing, EMBRACE THE DATA!!! Keep creating great content, keep optimizing, and stay up-to-date with best practices. Guess what? Gen AI SEO practices have mattered for a while now. If you’re unhappy with your rankings or seeing a dip in traffic but refuse to change course because you saw it work in the past…well, then I throw up my hands in defeat (or maybe I’ll just write a well-researched contextually relevant, seo optimized article about it).
